I've set up a keybinding for play/pause functionality through mpc so it's not so important now, but I'll try to play with the theme just to see if I can do it :-)
My current problem is that mpdule fails to load with evas_stringshare_add being undefined by the module and it's dependent libraries, I'm sure it'll get fixed soon (sounds like evas have changed some of their symbols around a little)...

Seems I need a little more educamation ;-) I installed edje_editor and pulled in the mpdule.edj file, removed the pause part and changed the signal of the play part to emit mpdule.toggle, when I reloaded the shebang the button did nuffink, how do I list the available signals (toggle is the mpc equivalent to play and pause which i hoped would be correct)... Maybe i should be psoting this question elsewhere...
